After Completion of Endodontic Treatment

Do not eat anything or drink hot liquids until your numbness has worn off. This will prevent you from biting your tongue, cheek, or lip or burning yourself.

The procedure will be performed using local anesthesia. There are usually no restrictions concerning driving or returning to work.

Endodontic treatment has now been completed. The root canal system has been permanently sealed. However, the outer surface is sealed with a temporary filling. A permanent restoration must be placed to protect your tooth against fracture and decay. Please telephone your restorative dentist within two to three weeks for an appointment. A complete report of treatment will be sent to your dentist. It is not unusual for a thin layer of temporary filling material to wear off after endodontic therapy. However if you think the entire filling has come out, contact our office.

Your tooth is more prone to fracture immediately after endodontic treatment. You should chew on the other side until your restorative dentist has placed a core build-up and a protective restoration, usually a crown. If your tooth’s strength is seriously compromised, your restorative dentist may place a post and core build-up inside the tooth. Your restorative dentist will determine the appropriate restoration to best protect your tooth.
